We found out in November that we’d be welcoming a new Petrick in July. We told family right away and announced to our friends in December. It wasn’t until February that we found out it’d be a little girl…To say the months leading up to her arrival were busy would be an understatement…We’ll do a separate post all about her, so until then here’s a very brief recap of the first half of 2014.
In January we made a trip up North to visit Sara’s family and took a day trip to Tahoe, which was a lot of fun, despite there not being very much snow this year.
In February we spent a weekend in Solvang with our good friends Elan and Noelle. It was Sara’s first time and the first time JB had been when he was old enough to enjoy all the wine tasting. Good timing to go when he had a designated driver, although we could walk just about everywhere
What a cute town!
March Madness had a new meaning this year. We did make a trip to Las Vegas to visit JB’s family, celebrate Kimi’s birthday and watch AZ play basketball in the Pac-12 Tournament, which unfortunately they lost in the championship game. It was still a fun trip.
The rest of our Spring was filled with the birthday celebrations of friends and family, including Oma’s 100th birthday! She was very excited that JB followed through with his promise of a great grandchild when she hit the big 1-0-0.
And of course more sporting events. We mad the trip to Orange County to watch AZ play in the Elite Eight, which should have ended differently…and of course Dodger games with our little peanut still in the womb…crazy to think that JB’s mom sat in the same seats at Dodger Stadium with him in her belly over 30 years ago.
With only a couple of weddings this year, the first was our friends the Glazers this June. JB and Sara were both in the wedding party, which meant lots of festivities, including the bridal shower, bachelorette party for the girls in Temecula, bachelor party for the boys in Nashville and of course the epic wedding at the Bel Air Bay Club.
We tried to fit in as much family time as possible before our world got turned upside down in July ![]()

Sara’s parents made a couple trips to LA, which were usually filled with baby projects, including painting a custom mural in the nursery.
We headed to Vegas to visit JB’s family one more time, for Sara and Donna’s birthdays and Father’s Day.
And of course we spent time with Oma, trying to continue the Sunday family dinner tradition. She couldn’t wait to meet her great granddaughter.
We also had lots of baby showers this year, for all of our friends who welcomed babies into the world. First was Sara’s cousin Julie’s in January, who’s little boy Callen was born on Super Bowl weekend. Then Sara’s friend Debby, the first of the baby girl trend…next was our friends the Tolles, whose little boy was born on the same day as our little girl (arranged marriage may be in the works…), Jenny who’s baby girl was born a month before ours, the Seto family’s co-ed shower for their daughter…who we’ve proclaimed besties with ours before they were even born (only about a month apart), and Sara’s friend from work Evan, who also had a little girl a couple weeks after us….geez, what was in the water this year, huh? But the best of course was Sara’s shower thrown by some of our favorite people, the Ananias Family. It was a great way to share the excitement of our soon-to-be born little girl with friends and family.
And because everyone loves an excuse for any sort of vacation, we took advantage of our “baby moon” with a long weekend on Catalina Island. Another first for Sara and someplace JB hadn’t been in many years, probably since he was a kid. It was the perfect relaxing destination, where we gave ourselves a tour driving a golf cart around the island, did a submarine under water tour, relaxed on the beach and ate at all the local restaurants. It’s definitely someplace we’ll return to for family vacations!
Our last hurrah before we became a family of 3 (well 4 really, we can’t forget Sammy) was 4th of July. Still JB’s favorite holiday, although this year may have been a little mellower than previous years.
I’m sure we’ve missed some memories from the first 6 months of the year…but that’s what happens when you wait 9 months to do a post, and have a new baby distracting you while you write! Stay tuned our the next post all about the newest Petrick…
